Superintendent to recommend which middle school to close at Nov. 19 meeting

Superintendent Paula Hart Rodas has announced that at the Nov. 19 school board meeting she will present her recommendation on which of Monrovia's two middle schools to close (Clifton or Santa Fe). She said the recommendation follows the gathering of community feedback and staff research. The public can give its input at that meeting. No vote will occur then; the final decision will be made Dec. 17.

Monrovia on Wikipedia and Grokipedia

I decided to compare the "Monrovia, California" entry on the human-edited Wikipedia with the same entry on the new AI-edited Grokipedia version "0.1".

On the one hand, there is more than three times as much information about Monrovia on Grokipedia as on Wikipedia (8,417 words vs. 2,775 words), and the information seems to be more up-to-date. For instance, Ducommun is listed on Wikipedia as one of the city's major employers, but its facility has been closed for some time. Grokipedia does not list it at all.

On the other hand, Wikipedia is definitely more attractively laid out, and includes pictures, of which Grokipedia currently has none.

Both systems have a mechanism for correcting errors. Next to entries in Wikipedia are "edit" links so you can change information. On Grokipedia you can highlight information and a pop-up allows you to click an "It's Wrong" button, which - I understand - makes the AI system double check the information and correct it if necessary. So Monrovia detail buffs may want to read the entry carefully.

Gertrude - affectionate, calm, and a world-class hand holder

Meet Gertrude, Pasadena Humane’s 10-year-old Cane Corso sweetheart! Gertrude is a gentle soul who wants just one thing in life: to be close to you. This lovely lady is a world-class hand-holder - she’ll place her big paw in your hand and happily keep it there for as long as you’ll let her.

Since arriving in her foster home, Gertrude has shown herself to be affectionate, calm, and endlessly loyal. She loves following her foster parents from room to room with quiet devotion. She’s happiest when being petted, and if the pets stop, she’s quick to offer a polite paw as a reminder for more love. She also enjoys slow morning walks and soaking up all the attention she can get.

Gertrude is ready to thrive in a home of her very own. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who’ll hold your hand through it all - literally and figuratively - Gertrude is your girl.

During November’s Adopt a Senior Pet Month, all adoption fees are waived for dogs and cats five years and older, just like Gertrude!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 10:00 – 5:00. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

Monrovia's SiLC Technologies expands its manufacturing into Monrovia

Monrovia-based SiLC Technologies ("helping machines see like humans") says it is expanding its Monrovia facility by 30 percent, to more than 30,000 square feet, and has an option on additional space if needed; that in support of the national effort to bring manufacturing back to the U.S.

SiLC CEO Mehdi Asghari said that "while we celebrate the national effort to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. and are working to do our part in this critical movement, we must also recognize that nowhere across the application spectrum is our dependency on China greater than in photonics and the associated components needed for packaging. This is just a small step forward on a long journey."

SiLC’s Monrovia facility will manufacture products for perimeter security and custom solutions designed to meet government requirements. This new facility complements SiLC’s existing global manufacturing network, which supports products for industrial and warehouse automation, robotics, and mobility markets.

The company says that its "new U.S.-based manufacturing facility, located next to our R&D team, allows us to design, assemble, test, and ship products all under one roof." Details.

Moody's improves Monrovia schools' bond rating

School superintendent Paula Hart Rodas reports that on October 1, Moody's - which rates the quality of bonds - boosted Monrovia Unified School District's rating from A1 to Aa3, making it cheaper for the district to borrow money. Aa3 is the fourth highest Moody's ranking, out of 21 ranks, so the district's bonds are considered high quality and very low credit risk.

Give your thoughts on what the city should do with the historic old house it bought at 222 E Cypress. The City Council has reviewed three affordable housing proposals for the property, all of which retain the existing home and mature trees while adding 13–16 units and parking. Here are the proposals in brief:
