Dinner at TK Cafe Hawaiian Barbecue

Dinner at TK Cafe, the Hawaiian barbecue place in the Vons shopping center at Myrtle and Foothill. Got the Spicy Chicken with Onion for $11.78 and a milk tea for $4.35. There actually are veggies here, they’re just buried under all that chicken. So, very tasty, very good price and I think I actually got about three meals out of it.

Fire Erupts at Bradoaks School

A fire broke out at Bradoaks Elementary School this morning at about 7:45 a.m. Firefighters responded and knocked down the blaze by about 8:15 and classes were canceled. More. Billows of black smoke were visible from about a mile away (I was in the hills and could easily see it).

Good Girl Jasmine - Loves People and Dogs

Jasmine is a beautiful bull terrier mix. She’s two years old, and full of fun! This beautiful girl is loving, cuddly and can’t wait to meet you!

Jasmine has been hanging out in a foster home, and her foster family says she’s doing well. They report that she's an excellent dog. She gets along with everyone in the family and is good with every dog she's met so far.

Jasmine appears to be crate-trained and responds to other training as well. She likes her toys but will happily give them to you if you want. What a good girl!

She’s only 35 pounds, so she’s the perfect size for snuggling on the couch next to you.

Monrovia Supports Adding City Historian's Homes to National Register of Historic Places

The city has submitted a letter of support for the homes of late City Historian and Treasurer, Steve Baker, to be included on the National Register of Historic Places, according to City Manager Dylan Feik. The homes, at 508 and 512 S. Ivy, are under construction to become an historic inn. Feik said there are several volunteer groups working to preserve the city's history: The Monrovia Historic Preservation Group, Monrovia Historical Society and Monrovia Historic Museum Foundation.

Police Department Seeks Volunteers For Citizen Patrol

Monrovia Police Department is looking for volunteers for its Citizen Patrol. Volunteers assist with graffiti patrols, subpoena service, school crossings, traffic control, neighborhood watch, and crime prevention. Candidates must attend a Citizens Academy, fill out lots of forms, undergo a background check and an interview. City Proposes Higher Monthly Sewer and Water Bill - Estimated $7.71 More For Single Family Residences

Monrovia is proposing to increase sewer and water rates an estimated $7.71 more per month. Sewer and water rates haven't been adjusted since 2020 and 2022, respectively, according to City Manager Dylan Feik, and since the last updates, costs for operating both utilities have increased. Above is an estimated monthly increase for a single-family residential customer based on 10 units of water usage. Discount programs will still be offered to seniors, veterans, low-income, and Lifeline customers. Details.

Free Art, Magic, Music and Refreshments This Sunday at Community Center

Art, magic, music and refreshments will be at the Artist Alley Gallery Reception, from 2 to 5 p.m.this Sunday at the Monrovia Community Center, 119 W. Palm Ave. There will be new art on display and for sale by four Monrovia Association of Fine Arts artists, Karl Washington will perform his magic show, art from the Clifton and Santa Fe middle schools art competition will be on display, and there will be live music and refreshments donated by Rivanis Baking Company and the Wine of the Month Club. Monrovia Police: Man Arrested Making Off With Gardening Truck; Man Punches Elderly Employee, Steals a Drink; Catalytic Converters Being Stolen; Etc.

During the last seven-day period, the Police Department handled 332 service events, resulting in 81 investigations.

Hit and Run Traffic Collision
January 18 at 8:05 a.m., a hit and run traffic collision was reported in the 700 block of W. Huntington involving three parked vehicles. This investigation is continuing.

Injury Traffic Collision
January 18 at 1:18 p.m., an injury traffic collision between a bicyclist and a vehicle was reported in the area of Mayflower and Huntington. The bicyclist sustained minor injuries and complained of pain. He was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Reckless Driving
January 18 at 10:51 p.m., an officer was patrolling the 1100 block of E. Huntington when he heard the sound of a vehicle driving recklessly. The vehicle was gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Residential Burglary
January 19 at 8:08 a.m., a caller in the 200 block of W. Lemon reported that someone broke into his garage and stole his bike. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft Auto
January 19 at 8:32 a.m., a grand theft auto was reported in the 400 block of W. Palm. This investigation is counting.

Theft / Fraud
January 19 at 8:50 a.m., a resident in the 200 block of Linwood reported that her purse was stolen from inside her vehicle. This investigation is counting.

Grand Theft
January 19 at 9:19 a.m., a caller in the 100 block of N. Fifth advised that sometime during the night, the catalytic converter to his vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft Auto / Pursuit / Felony Evading / Parole Hold – Suspect Arrested
January 19 at 10:49 a.m., a victim in the area of Grand and Foothill reported that his truck full of gardening equipment had just been stolen. Officers located the vehicle nearby as it was getting into the 210 freeway. When the vehicle exited the freeway, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled and came to rest after it collided. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot and officers located him a short distance away. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Robbery / Elder Abuse
January 19 at 11:34 a.m., an employee from a business in the 1500 block of S. Myrtle reported a robbery where he was injured. An investigation revealed that when the suspect entered the business with a backpack, the employee, who is elderly, put his hands on the backpack and told the suspect he could not enter with it. The suspect punched the employee in the face, entered the business, grabbed a drink and as he was about to exit, the victim got in front of the suspect to prevent him from leaving but the suspect pushed him out of the way and fled the scene. MFD responded and treated the employee at the scene. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
January 19 at 11:48 a.m., a caller in the 800 block of W. Hillcrest reported that the catalytic converter to his vehicle was stolen while parked in his driveway. This investigation is continuing.

Mail Theft
January 19 at 4:04 p.m., the caller in the 200 block of W. Pomona reported mail stolen from her mailbox. This investigation is continuing.

Petty Theft
January 19 at 4:17 p.m., a caller from a business in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle reported tools were stolen from inside of a work vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Municipal Code Violation – Suspect Arrested
January 19 at 10:30 p.m., officers were patrolling the 600 block of S. Shamrock and found two adults loitering in the park after hours. Both subjects were arrested, cited and released at the scene.

Shoplifting
January 19 at 11:10 p.m., an employee from a store in the 500 block of W. Huntington reported a male and female subject, entered the store, took merchandise and left without paying. The subjects were gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
January 20 at 10:30 a.m., a caller in the 3100 block of S. Peck reported the catalytic converter to his vehicle stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Injury Traffic Collision
January 20 at 10:57 a.m., officers responded to the area of Duarte and Mayflower regarding a vehicle injury traffic collision. One of the parties sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver at fault was issued a citation.

Mental Evaluation
January 20 at 12:07 p.m., a disturbing subject was reported in the 100 block of W. Central. The caller stated that his roommate was damaging property inside of the apartment. An investigation revealed the subject had damaged property inside of the residence with a hammer, and made suicidal statement to the officers about wanting to kill himself and hurt other people. It was determined he was a danger to himself and to others. He was transported to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.

Domestic Battery – Suspect Arrested
January 20 at 6:13 p.m., a resident in the 1100 block of Sesmas reported his girlfriend had become upset with him and began hitting him. Officers arrived and an investigation revealed the girlfriend was the aggressor. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Criminal Threats / Vandalism
January 20 at 8:37 p.m., a resident in the 900 block of S. Ivy reported a male subject had just shattered the front window to his home and yelled that he was going to kill him. The resident said the subject was staying in the house, but the resident did not want him back in the house. The subject was gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
January 21 at 1:36 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Myrtle and Olive when he saw a motorist commit a traffic violation. A traffic stop was conducted and the officer made contact with the driver who displayed symptoms of being under the influence. A DUI investigation revealed the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Commercial Burglary – Suspects Arrested
January 21 at 6:13 a.m., officers responded to a business in the 100 block of W. Pomona regarding a burglary in progress. As officers were arriving a suspicious vehicle with several subjects inside was fleeing. The officer approached the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop with five subjects inside and property stolen from the business. The suspect were arrested and taken into custody.

Grand Theft
January 21 at 10:34 a.m., a caller in the 500 block of W. Maple reported that the catalytic converter to his vehicle was stolen sometime between January 18 and January 20. This investigating is continuing.

Vandalism
January 21 at 12:50 p.m., graffiti was reported on a wall in the 600 block of W. Huntington. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
January 21 at 2:37 p.m., a caller in the 300 block of Melrose reported a theft from his vehicle in the 300 block of Melrose. The victim forgot to lock his vehicle and sometime between January 18 and January 21, someone entered his vehicle and property. This investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft
January 22 at 5:15 a.m., a victim in the 600 block of Monterey reported two male subjects were stealing the catalytic converter to her vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Vandalism – Suspect Arrested
January 22 at 3:29 p.m., a caller in the 100 block of W. Central called to report a male subject breaking things. Officers arrived and contacted the male subject. He was arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

Grand Theft Auto
January 22 at 6:03 p.m., a victim in the 500 block of W. Duarte called to report his vehicle stolen. This investigation is counting.

Theft
January 22 at 9:03 p.m., a theft from a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of Montana. The victim reported the tailgate to his vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Unlawful Fire
January 23 at 1:48 a.m., an officer observed smoke coming from the 700 block of W. Duarte. Officers arrived and determined it was created by several subjects. The fire was extinguished by MFD and the subjects were cited for the violation.

Embezzlement
January 23 at 8:07 a.m., a business owner in the 900 block of W. Foothill called to report that a former employee had stolen business checks, forged signatures, and cashed them to his personal account. Officers contacted the subject, who admitted the theft and forgery. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Hit and Run
January 23 at 7:36 p.m., a victim in the 200 block of E. Greystone called to report a vehicle struck his parked vehicle and the driver ran away. This investigation is continuing.

Domestic Violence
January 24 at 3:00 a.m., a female subject in the 600 block of E. Colorado called to report that her husband was arguing with her and abused her. Officers arrived and observed that both the male and female subject had been drinking. An investigation determined the couple had been arguing and the female subject hit the male subject numerous times. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Commercial Burglary
January 24 at 4:34 a.m., officers were alerted to a burglary in progress in the 1100 block of S. Shamrock. Officers arrived and the subjects were gone prior to officers arriving. This investigation is continuing.

Theft
January 24 at 8:03 a.m., a victim in the 500 block of Violet called to report a theft. Items totaling more than $550 were stolen from his vehicle overnight. The victim reviewed surveillance camera footage, which captured the crime in progress. This investigation is continuing.

Loitering
January 24 at 11:40 p.m., officers responded to a call to the Boys and Girls Club regarding subjects sleeping at the front doors. The officers located 2 subjects sleeping by the front doors. They were identified and cited for loitering in a park after hours. This is the second time for one of them being cited for this same reason. They were both cited and released in the field. The subjects cleared the area without incident.

Statement of City Council Candidate Sergio Jimenez

Sergio was unanimously appointed to the Monrovia City Council in 2022. Prior to that, Sergio served on the Monrovia Historical Preservation Commission for 9 years and was a Former Chair. Sergio has been a Board Member of the Monrovia-based Volunteer Center of the San Gabriel Valley for 12 years. A Board Member of Monrovia Historical Preservation Group (MOHPG) for 3 years. A Member of Monrovia Rotary, The Bradoaks Neighborhood Watch, Monrovia Latino Heritage, a Reader at Read Across Monrovia at Monrovia Schools, AND THE Chair of Monrovia Art in Public Places Committee. He also served on the Monrovia Make A Difference Day for 10 years. Sergio is a Third Generation Monrovian with a Masters degree and a Juris Doctor law degree, lifelong resident who attended local schools, public servant, and businessman. His priorities include:

Strong Public Safety: Sergio has been a strong advocate for giving Monrovia Law Enforcement and Firefighters the resources they need to perform their jobs. Public safety is the #1 job of government. Sergio wants to continue building on strong relationships with First Responders.

Preserving Monrovia’s Historic Identity: Advocating to preserve the historic character and architecture of Monrovia has been a priority for Sergio. He has championed recognizing and celebrating the Route 66 Centennial in Monrovia. If elected will continue to be the voice for Historical Preservation on the Monrovia City Council.

Small Business Advocacy: Advocating for businesses was one of the reasons that Sergio ran for City Council. Sergio has met with small business owners to help create a more business friendly Monrovia. Sergio will continue to promote the small business community.

Mental Health: Sergio voted to implement the SGV Care program that adds mental health professionals to the 911 and 988 Emergency Calls to those suffering a mental health crisis in Monrovia.

Expanding More Affordable Housing: Sergio is for setting aside units in housing developments that are far more affordable than market rental rates.

Homelessness/The Unhoused: Sergio is committed to continue the progress of Monrovia’s Homeless Prevention Program.

Captain is a regal German Shepherd who is as nice as he is handsome! Captain is about 4 years old, and ready to be someone’s best buddy!

Captain has been out on a number of field trips and he’s become a favorite of the Pasadena Humane volunteers. He is very friendly around all the people he’s met, even a curious toddler - he's been an ideal ambassador!

He walks right by your side and is completely relaxed while you take a leisurely walk in the neighborhood. When you stop for a break, he sits right by your side and takes it all in.

Captain appears to have done some training and responds very well to training cues. He’s one smart cookie!

Captain is ready to go home with you- he's available for a 10-day adoption trial as well to make sure he’s a good fit for your home!

People Counter To Be Installed at Wilderness Preserve; Council Approves Satoru Park; Gravel, Bags Available; Learn Beer Brewing; Garden Plots Available

~ A people-counter device will be installed at the Ridgeside access point for the Hillside Wilderness Preserve to better understand how the trials are being used. An invisible beam and detect hikers and bicyclist as they pass by. The device will not take pictures. For questions contact Canyon Park and Hillside Wilderness Preserve Staff at 256-8282.

~ The City Council has approved naming Monrovia's new park Satoru Tsuneishi Park to honor him, his family and Asian Americans. Hale Corporation donated the land behind the new Chick-Fil-A to the city for the park.

~ In anticipation of this weekend's storm, gravel and gravel bag materials will be available at the Recreation Park parking lot off of Olive, near the skate park. Self serve. Monrovia Police: Driver Shoots Up Another Car; Woman Sets Her Clothing on Fire; Seller Conned With Counterfeit Money; Threatening With Gun; Drunks and Drugs; Etc.

Domestic Violence / Wanted Person – Suspect Arrested
January 11 at 4:18 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 600 block of S. Mountain when he saw a motorist commit a driving violation. A computer search of the license plate revealed the motorist was wanted for a domestic violence incident. The officer made contact with the motorist and confirmed the motorist was a wanted person. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Mental Evaluation
January 11 at 6:58 a.m., a caller in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle reported he wanted to harm himself. Officers arrived and located to subject and detained him. Officers determined he was a danger to himself. He was transported to a medical facility for a mental evaluation.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
January 11 at 3:39 p.m., a caller in the area of Chestnut and Magnolia called to report a possible DUI driver in the area. Officers arrived and located a vehicle stopped illegally in the roadway. The driver was contacted and signs of intoxication were present. A DUI investigation determined the driver was under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Attempt Burglary
January 12 at 8:57 a.m., a resident in the 600 block of Willowbrook called to report that someone tried breaking into his home. Two male subjects walked onto his property, into his backyard, turned off the resident’s electric power, and looked through a window. The resident yelled and the suspects fled the area. Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
January 12 at 10:20 a.m., a caller in the area of Mountain and Lemon reported a vehicle blocking traffic in the area of Mountain and Lemon. Officers arrived and located the vehicle, and made contact with the driver. The driver displayed sings of being under the influence. A DUI investigation revealed the driver was under the influence. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

January 12 at 11:03 a.m., a passerby reported vandalism on a plaque in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle. This investigation is continuing.

Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
January 12 at 1:07 p.m., a welfare check was requested in the 200 block of E. Foothill regarding a subject passed out on the floor. Officers arrived and located the subject. A computer check revealed the subject had a no bail warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Shoplifting – Suspect Arrested
January 12 at 3:32 p.m., an employee from a business in the 700 block of E. Huntington called to report a shoplifting incident. Officers arrived and located the subject. He was arrested, cited, and released at the scene.

Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
January 13 at 12:52 a.m., officers patrolling the area of Myrtle and Walnut saw two subject lying on the ground and made contact with the subjects. An investigation revealed the subjects were too intoxicated to care for themselves. They were arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

Warrant / Drug Offense – Suspect Arrested
January 14 at 12:15 a.m., while patrolling the 3100 block of S. Peck an officer saw a bicyclist commit a traffic violation. He was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken into custody.

January 14 at 1:21 a.m., a caller reported a vehicle driving erratically. Officers arrived, located the vehicle in the area of Shamrock and Evergreen and conducted a traffic stop. January 14 at 3:18 a.m., a victim in the 100 block of W. Pomona called to report that his vehicle had been broken into. This investigation is continuing.

January 14 at 8:37 a.m., a caller in the 100 block of N. Garfield reported his niece was being physically abused by her partner. Officers arrived and made several attempts to have any occupants come outside. As she walked outside, a nearby resident reported a suspicious subject in their backyard. Officers arrived and located the suspect who was determined to be the partner. A computer revealed she had a warrant for her arrested. She was arrested and taken into custody.

January 14 at 10:01 a.m., a resident in the 1000 block of E. Royal Oaks called to report her vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Weapon Offense
January 14 at 6:18 p.m., a victim was inside a business in the 400 block of W. Foothill when he had a disagreement with a male subject. The subject threatened to shoot the victim, and flashed a gun. The suspect left prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Ex-Felon with Ammo – Suspect Arrested
January 15 at 12:15 a.m., a resident in the 900 block of S. Fifth reported a male subject was at her residence in violation of a court order. Officers arrived and determined a court order did not exist and an investigation revealed the male subject was an ex-felon in possession of ammunition. He was arrested and taken into custody.

January 15 at 9:32 a.m., a caller in the 1200 block of S. Primrose called to report that someone had thrown a beer bottle through her window. This investigation is continuing.

January 15 at 10:45 a.m., an employee from a business in the 700 block of E. Huntington called to report that a number of propane tanks had been stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Illegal Fire / Warrants / Drugs – Suspect Arrested
January 15 at 12:32 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of W. Pomona on a report of a subject setting a fire. Officers arrived and located a female subject had set her clothing on fire. A computer search revealed she had numerous warrant for her arrest and was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested and taken into custody.

January 15 at 4:12 p.m., officers were dispatched to a store in the 100 block of W. Foothill regarding a theft. The suspects involved were detained nearby. The store did not want prosecution for the theft, but one of the subjects involved had a bench warrant. She was arrested for the warrant and taken into custody.

Elder Abuse – Suspect Arrested
January 15 at 4:43 p.m., a resident in the 1000 block of S. Mountain called to report that she'd been battered by her daughter. They had been having arguments all night and throughout the day. When officers arrived the daughter had fled the location and they could not locate her. While the handling officer was obtaining an emergency protective order for the mother, the daughter returned. Assisting officers were able to locate and detain her. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Attempt Murder
January 15 at 6:38 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Alta Vista and Central regarding shots fired. An investigation determined two vehicles were involved in a road range incident and the driver of one of the vehicles shot at the victim vehicle numerous times. The occupants of the victim vehicle had two adults and three children. No injuries were reported. This investigation is continuing.

January 16 at 2:52 p.m., a business in the 800 block of S. Shamrock called to report an unknown subject loitering. Officers arrived and located the subject, who was known to the officers from prior contacts. A computer search revealed he had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

January 16 at 9:22 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of E. Foothill said he parked vehicle was stolen. This investigation is continuing.

January 17 at 8:02 a.m., a resident in the 800 block of W. Duarte called to report that mailboxes had been broken into and mail stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Counterfeit
January 17 at 10:49 p.m., a victim arranged to meet a male subject in the 100 block of Oak Grove who was interested in buying shoes from the victim. After the exchange the victim realized that the money used to make the purchase was counterfeit. This investigation is continuing.

Playful Chet Is Life of the Party - Dog Party or People Party

Chet is the life of the party wherever he goes! This handsome two-year-old extroverted husky is ready to make you his new BFF!

Chet knows how to work a room. He basks in attention from adults, kids, and other dogs. He is happiest when someone is petting him, brushing his luxurious coat, or, if you’re a dog, playing with him! He wants to play with nearly every dog he sees!

It appears that Chet is house-trained, and he has been working on training cues with the volunteers at Pasadena Humane. He’s not particularly treat-motivated, but he hasn’t found a toy that he doesn’t love, and he’ll go through all his tricks until you give it to him.

Chet is energetic, so having another large dog for him to play with would be nice. He has bonded quickly with some of the dogs he’s spent time with while out on field trips.

Chet is an all-around fun dude and he's ready to brighten up your days!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

Designs to Honor Former Mayor Pat Ostrye As Neighborhood Treasure

At its next meeting (agenda here), the Art in Public Places Committee will consider five designs to honor the next Neighborhood Treasure, former Monrovia Mayor Pat Ostrye, who was selected by the committee last January.

Ostrye was born in Minnesota in 1924. In 1944, she joined the Navy Women and was accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) and was stationed in San Diego. In 1974, she successfully ran for Monrovia City Council. She was the first woman to serve on the City Council and, in 1978, the first elected woman mayor of the city. During her leadership, she brought Meals-on-Wheels, Dial-a-Ride, home library and a federally funded senior lunch program to the city. In 1980, at the end of her mayoral term she was elected City Clerk and held that position until retiring in 1986. In 1992, she ran unopposed for the part-time position of City Treasurer, thus having served in all four of the City's then elective offices. The amount budgeted for the Neighborhood Treasure is $19,500. One of the designs is shown here, the others are here.

Space Exploration Event for School-Age Children Jan. 17

Monrovia Public Library, with Sidewalk Astronomers and Monrovia High Astronomy Club, will host a space exploration event this Wednesday, Jan. 17, 6-8 p.m. It will feature learning stations and telescope viewing of the moon and planets in Library Park. Fellowship Church Moves to Smaller Venue

On Jan. 27, Monrovia's Fellowship Church, which has met in the Monrovia High School Auditorium for years, will be changing locations to Fellowship Center, the church's administrative offices at the northeast corner of Huntington and California. The letter announcing the move said the new space will be "intimate." The move to a smaller venue follows internal turmoil last year involving the main pastor being disciplined for sexting, for complaints about an unfriendly work environment and about how church funds were used.

City Council to Consider Streamlining Housing Development Process; Charge Developers More to Minimize Traffic Impact

At its next meeting (agenda here) the Monrovia City Council will consider ...

~ Streamlining the review of multi-family residential developments, as required by state law. The proposal would eliminate the conditional use permit requirement in zones that allow multi-family developments, and get rid of the requirement for some projects to be reviewed by the city's Development Review Committee. ~ Increasing the amount it charges developers to minimize the traffic impact of their developments. City staff recommends increasing the Traffic Impact Fee to "$2,575 per net new afternoon peak hour trip." Details.

Water and Sewer Rates Will Likely Go Up; Blood Drive Jan. 25; Monrovia Duarte Black Alumni Will Screen Film

In his latest report (https://goo.gl/aOqX7O) City Manager Dylan Feik reports:

~ The Monrovia City Council will consider raising water and sewer rates, which have not been adjusted since 2018 for water rates and 2020 for sewer rates. Feik cites a recent study that notes high inflationary costs of operating public utilities. The adjustments will support sewer and water infrastructure, and will fund capital improvements. Monrovia, which he said has some of the lowest water and sewer fees in the region, will continue to offer discounts to seniors, veterans, and Lifeline customers. Feik did not indicate how much fees might go up.

~ The Monrovia Police Department will host this year's Battle of the Badges Blood Drive on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Community Center. January 4 at 10:27 a.m., a caller in the 1600 block of S. Mountain reported that while shopping inside of a business his vehicle was broken into and tools were stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Unlawful Burning / No Bail / False Personation – Suspect Arrested
January 4 at 12:04 p.m., an officer patrolling the area of Central and Shamrock saw a subject near an open fire along a retaining wall. The officer attempted to make contact with the subject, but he fled as the officer approached and located nearby. A computer check revealed he was on parole for arson and had a no bail warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Mental Evaluation
January 4 at 12:31 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of S. Myrtle regarding a disturbing subject. The caller stated a male subject lunged at her while holding a box cutter. Officers arrived and determined he was a danger to others and was transported to a medical facility for a mental evaluation.

January 4 at 10:13 p.m., a retail store in the 1600 block of S. Mountain called to report a subject was in the process of stealing items. As officers arrived on scene the subject exited the store, where he was quickly detained after attempting to run. The stolen property was returned to the store. A search of the subject revealed he was in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Municipal Code Violation – Suspect Arrested
January 4 at 10:42 p.m., officers detained a subject in the 1600 block of S. Myrtle for being in a park after hours. A computer search revealed she was reported missing. She was arrested, issued a citation, removed from the missing persons system, and released at the scene.

January 5 at 12:18 p.m., a female subject walked into the MPD lobby and informed staff she was suicidal. An officer spoke with the individual and transported her to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.

January 5 at 6:10 p.m., an injury traffic collision was reported in the area of Lemon and California. Officers arrived and determined one of the vehicles went through a stop sign and collided with another vehicle, causing it to overturn.

January 5 at 7:11 p.m., a victim in the 300 block of Violet called to report that his vehicle had been broken into and items were stolen. This investigation is continuing.

Receiving Stolen Property / Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
January 5 at 8:35 p.m., officers were alerted to the area of Madison and Foothill regarding a vehicle involved in a crime. Officers arrived and located the vehicle in the 100 block of E. Lime with two subjects inside. A high risk traffic stop was conducted and two subjects were removed from the vehicle. An investigation revealed the vehicle was full of stolen property and a computer search revealed warrants for both subjects. Both subjects were arrested and taken into custody.

January 5 at 11:16 p.m., while patrolling the area of Magnolia and Evergreen, an officer observed a bicyclist commit several traffic violations. The officer conducted a traffic stop and a computer search revealed the bicyclist had a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

January 5 at 11:17 p.m., a fight was reported in the 400 block of S. Myrtle where a subject brandished a weapon. Officers arrived and located the subject who was not following officers’ commands. Officers were able to detain him and the weapon was not located. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested
January 5 at 11:28 p.m., while officers were investigating a call of a fight in the 400 block of S. Myrtle, a friend of one of the parties involved in the fight continually obstructed officers while they were trying to conduct an investigate. It was apparent that the subject was too intoxicated. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

January 6 at 7:07 a.m., a caller in the 1000 block of Royal Oak reported his vehicle stolen. This investigation is continuing.

January 6 at 3:00 p.m., officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle in the area of Foothill and Madison. Officers arrived and located the vehicle as it pulled into a parking lot. Officers made contact with the driver and removed him from the vehicle. An investigation determined that the vehicle had a stolen plate which did not belong to the vehicle. January 7 at 9:55 p.m., employees of a retail store in the 600 block of W. Huntington called to report that two subjects who appeared intoxicated were loading up a cart with property and appeared to be ready to leave without paying. The suspects were gone prior to officers’ arrival. This investigation is continuing.

Monrovia's Jewish Federation to Hold Holocaust Vigil in Pasadena

The Monrovia-based Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, with the City of Pasadena, will hold a 25-hour Holocaust vigil, "Every Person Has a Name," on Jan. 27-28 at Pasadena City Hall to commemorate UN International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event, addressing the rise in antisemitism, begins with a commemoration ceremony, then a 24-hour name-reading vigil of Holocaust victims. There will also be an exhibition titled, "The Righteous Among the Nations," from Israel’s National Holocaust Museum showcasing those who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Affectionate Kilo Would Be a Great Ride-Along Companion

Five-year-old Kilo is such a good boy- and he knows it! He’s sweet and affectionate with a very calm demeanor.

Kilo has become a favorite of the volunteers at Pasadena Humane who have taken him out on several field trips. He walks well on leash, enjoys car rides, and always has a fun day out on his adventures. He’s quite fond of hiking, but really any excursion for him is a blast!

He has been known to sit calmly in the backseat of the car, his nose sticking out the window, serenely watching the trip unfold. He’ll then lay down for a nice nap at your feet. If you’re looking for a ride-along pal, Kilo would love to be it!

Kilo is eligible for the Seniors for Seniors program, so his adoption fee is waived for any adopter over 60.

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet. Adoptions are by appointment only, and new adoption appointments are available every Sunday and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Limited same-day appointments are available during weekend Visiting Hours.
