Local husband and wife team, Tim and Susan West, are the new owners of Mooyah Burgers, Fries & Shakes in the Vons shopping center. The ownership change was effective Sept. 1. According to a press release, the couple and their six children were all born and raised in town and are working the restaurant as a family - with two of their children working there. The Wests plan to have a grand re-opening event in the near future.

Why is Hwy Esplanade a Highway?
So I asked Steve Baker, Monrovia's city historian, who said that the street was named by JE MacIntire (I'm unsure of spelling), the developer of the area north of what is now Huntington to Chestnut, and bordered on the west by what is now Monterey and on the east by Mayflower.
For some reason MacIntire called the development the "Highway Block," I guess maybe because it was near Huntington (called Falling Leaf at the time). But anyway, the "Hwy" part of Hwy Esplanade refers to the name of that part of town and is not a description of the street.

Scouting Program Open House Oct. 13
Venture Crew 147 will host an Open House for prospective members on Saturday, 13 October at the Gazebo in Recreation Park in Monrovia. We’ll get started at 3:30 and wrap up by 5:00. After that we’ll fire up the BBQ. Parents are encouraged to attend. Venturing is a Scouting program for young women and men ages 14 to 21 with a focus on adventure, leadership, personal growth, and service. September 6 at 7:59 p.m., a caller reported a motorist had collided into two parked vehicles in the 900 block of W. Colorado. When officers arrived, they found the driver stuck in the vehicle with non-life-threatening visible injuries. A computer check revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital, and charges will be sought at a later date.

He did not have any injuries from the collision. He was transported to a nearby hospital for his heart condition.

Arcadia Police Looking for this Man Regarding Sexual Assault
On Sept. 8, at approximately 8:42 p.m., an adult female victim was sexually assaulted while walking in the 2300 block of S. Santa Anita Avenue. The suspect is described as follows:
Male Hispanic, in his mid-20's, 5'6", 140-150 lbs., with a shaved head, a long nose, and a distinct crossed left eye. The suspect also had what appears to be a tattoo on the left side of his neck resembling "growing plant vines." The suspect was wearing a light colored t-shirt and dark colored shorts. The suspect rode a silver or metal color BMX style bicycle.
The victim was able to complete a composite sketch of the suspect and the Arcadia Police Department is interested in hearing from anyone who recognizes a person matching the composite sketch.
The case is under investigation. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to contact the Arcadia Police Department at 574-5151, case number 18-4073. Ulta Beauty Opening - Being Joined by Kids Empire, Tapioca Express
Ulta Beauty, which is opening at Monrovia Landing shopping center (former Albertson's shopping center), will be joined shortly by Kid's Empire (hopefully in January) and Tapioca Express (hopefully in November).
Ulta Beauty is the largest beauty retailer in the U.S. Its grand opening will be Sept. 14, at 9:45 a.m.
Michael Odell, principal and co-founder of Warner Pacific Properties, also reports that, "We have also signed two new tenants, Kids Empire and Tapioca Express, which brings the occupancy to 100 percent."
Kids Empire, which was developed in Southern California, will open a 10,500-square-foot facility at Monrovia Landing. Kids Empire provides a safe, high-quality place for children to play and explore. There is a cafe where adults.
Tapioca Express is a South El Monte-based Taiwanese-American fast-food franchise chain specializing in bubble tea, coffee, fruit juices, yogurt, smoothies and slushies, and small meals, sandwiches and light snacks. It will occupy a 200-square-foot restaurant space.

~ The City has begun serving free meals to seniors at the Monrovia Community Center. Lunches are served from 11:30 a.m. to noon, with a suggested donation of $2. All seniors over 55 are welcome, but will be required to become a club member of either the Gad-A-Bouts or New Horizons Club after two visits. Memberships are $5 for the year.
Comment: I'm not in the least bit comfortable with the city making membership in a private club a requirement to receive a government service. This seems wrong.

More than 30 craft beer and wines from award winning breweries and wineries. Proceeds benefit the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce & Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills. And yes, you gotta be at least 21.
~ East Huntington Drive lanes will occasionally be closed between Sept. 10 - Sept. 19 so workers can do maintenance and repair work on the overhead pedestrian bridge The work will be between the hours of 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., from Monday through Friday only.
~ Old Town sidewalks will be pressure washed starting Monday, Sept. 10 through Sept. 12. Each day, the work will begin at 3 a.m. and end at 7 a.m.

Monrovia Police Joins City of Hope in Battle Against Breast Cancer
The Pink Patch Project began in 2015, when the Irwindale Police Department raised over $20,000 for breast cancer research by selling pink colored versions of their police patch. In 2016, the Pink Patch Project quickly grew into a collaborative effort between numerous Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies.
Beginning in September, the Monrovia Police Department will be selling limited edition pink police department patches and challenge coins for $10 each. We will also be selling limited edition MPD breast cancer awareness pins for $5 and graphic designed t-shirts for $20. All profits from these sales will be donated to the City of Hope to help fund their research for breast cancer.
Also, throughout the month of October, in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Monrovia Police Officers will be wearing pink patches on their patrol uniforms to continue to help raise awareness. These are the same official patches that will be available for purchase.
To purchase official Monrovia Police Department Pink Patch items, please come by the police station, located at 140 E. Lime Avenue, and help support the cause. Cash or checks are accepted. Please make checks payable to the Monrovia Police Officers' Association.

Frisbee Dog Needs a Home
Maggie (A461589) is a 10-years-young terrier mix looking for a new home! She loves to play with toys and will fetch a Frisbee like a pro! One of Maggie's favorite things to do is go for walks in the park. She's been known to jump up on the park bench to get in a snuggle with a volunteer. Maggie is a true volunteer favorite, and they say she loves to be petted and scratched. Maggie also knows her sit and down commands. If you are looking for an active older pup, stop by and ask for Maggie.
The adoption fee for dogs is $130. All dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before going to their new home.
New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

Fork Fire No Threat to Monrovia
Monrovia Fire Department reports:
While smoke from the fire is highly visible, it is important to note that the San Gabriel Canyon is not in close proximity to Monrovia. Based upon the latest on-the-ground information, there is currently no threat to Monrovia. The public is being urged to stay clear of the area.
The Monrovia Fire Department will continue to monitor this situation and weather patterns closely, and if anything changes that may impact the safety of our community, the City will be certain to provide notification immediately at that time.
