Helicopter rescue of hiker from Hillside Wilderness Preserve

Here is some video footage of the Sheriff's Department helicopter rescue of a hiker in the Hillside Wilderness Preserve, who - a ranger told me - was suffering from dehydration. According to social media posts, the helicopter took the hiker to Monrovia High School, where he or she was apparently taken to the hospital. Many thanks to Sam Kurutz for sharing this video.

Boys & Girls Club carnival set for June 1

A summer carnival and awards rally hosted by Monrovia's Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills will celebrate youth and community leaders on Sunday, June 1, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Recreation Park. The event features games, inflatables, food trucks, and more. Wristbands cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Adults must pre-register, here.

Girl Scouts to host Asian American Pacific Islander event

Monrovia Duarte Girl Scouts Troop 6371 will host an Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration with cultural crafts, food, and performances on May 31 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 320 N. Halstead Street in Pasadena. Craft stations representing Japan, India, China, and Maori culture, along with a Chinese Lion Dance. Registration here . Cost: $25 per child, $20 per adult.

Garden Club to honor outstanding local gardens

The Monrovia Garden Club will honor outstanding local gardens during its May 27 meeting at First Presbyterian Church. The event begins at 6 p.m. with social time, followed by a 6:30 p.m. program featuring the annual Garden Awards, city presentations, a video tour, and garden addresses. The club will also donate $500 to the Altadena Green Foundation.

Summer Movies in the Park July and August

The city will host "Summer Movies in the Park," a series of free, family-friendly outdoor films every Saturday at dusk. Locations are: Station Square Park (July 19), Recreation Park (July 26), Julian Fisher Park (August 2), and Library Park (August 9). Films include Moana 2, Wonka, Sonic 3, and Wicked.

Friday activities for teens coming this summer

City offices to be closed Memorial Day, Trash and street sweeping delayed

Memorial Day closures and service changes: City Hall, Public Works, Library, and Police and Fire Administration offices closed Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day. Athens Services trash pickup delayed one day during that week; street sweeping canceled May 26–30 with parking restrictions relaxed. Regular schedules resume the following week.

Monrovia Canyon Park should open in June

City Manager Dylan Feik reports that Monrovia Canyon Park is expected to reopen in June. Final work is underway after Edison approved electrical connections for the sewer. The city has tested pump stations, removed an old water tank, renovated the Nature Center, and added fiber and wifi. Restroom upgrades, picnic table placement, and other finishing touches are in progress.
