Whip-smart Monfils loves fetch and the outdoors

Monfils is a sensitive and handsome Belgian Malinois mix who is more than ready for his forever family! This whip-smart guy is three years old, and a lean 65 pounds.

He’s been spending time in a foster home, and his foster parents have learned so much about him that will make his transition to an adoptive home very easy.

Monfils is full of love and enjoys nothing more than snuggling up with his favorite person. He’s a big fan of fetch and absolutely loves being outdoors, making him the perfect match for someone with a yard or a peaceful space where he can roam and play.

He is housetrained and very well-behaved inside—he’s never destructive and rarely barks. He’s happiest when he’s by your side, soaking up belly rubs and showering you with affection. He knows how to sit and is generally obedient at home, but he can be a bit impatient with training.

Monfils would likely do best as the only pet in a quiet household. He’s looking for someone who will give him the love and stability he needs while understanding his quirks.

During the week of 4/28 - 5/3, all dog adoption fees are waived at Pasadena Humane!

The normal adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 10:00 – 5:00. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

Happy Easter, Monrovia!

So now it’s Easter Sunday, and picking up where we left off on Good Friday (see here), our model of the tomb where Jesus was laid on Friday is now – amazingly! – empty.

We can see Jesus’ shroud lying empty in the tomb, and the Roman soldiers who were so diligently guarding it to make sure that disciples did not steal the body, are out cold.

But where is Jesus?

That’s what we asked our children when they woke up in the morning to find this scene.

They searched around the living room until finally, There he is! up on the fireplace mantle.

He has risen!

Indeed He has.

Happy Easter, Monrovia!

A Good Friday to all, Monrovia!

Happy Good Friday, Monrovia! Or Black Friday if you prefer.

I was looking at some old pictures and happened upon this one.

Years ago it occurred to me that there are nativity decorations for Christmas, but why aren't there more Easter decorations (nothing against Easter bunnies and eggs, but I meant something more associated with the Christian celebration).

So for our kids I made two small stacks of books and bridged them with another book to make a cave tomb and took one of my son's Lego characters and wrapped it in tissue paper to represent Jesus, and put Jesus in the tomb. For a rock to cover the opening I used a grapefruit. Lego knights represented the Roman soldiers diligently guarding the tomb.

In later years this became a paper mache tomb with a coaster for the rock covering the tomb, as you can see here.

Well, it's Black Friday (black for what Jesus endured), or Good Friday (for what he accomplished by his crucifixion), but Easter is coming!

Ace is a chill gentleman - confident but not pushy

Meet Ace, a 1½-year-old husky with a chill vibe that sets him apart from the typical high-energy stereotype. Ace is the kind of dog who seems to take it all in stride—whether he’s lounging in the grass, strolling through a crowd, or calmly watching the world go by.

At Pasadena Humane’s Wiggle Waggle Walk, Ace stole the spotlight not just for his striking looks, but for his calm, friendly demeanor. He greeted visitors with a wagging tail and gentle curiosity, happily posed for photos, and took treats like a gentleman.

Ace gets along beautifully with other dogs and doesn’t mind a little hustle and bustle. He walked easily through vendor booths, stayed relaxed in close proximity to other pups, and even had some playful moments with toys. He’s confident without being pushy and curious without being overwhelming. Whether it’s a walk through the neighborhood or a quiet afternoon in the yard, Ace moves through life with an easygoing rhythm.

If you’re looking for a husky who leans more “zen” than “zoomies,” Ace might be your perfect match. He’s ready to bring his gentle presence into a loving home—maybe yours?

The adoption fee for dogs is $150.

Long Unmarked Graves of Two Extraordinary African American Women to be Marked

Two notable African American Monrovia sisters, whose resting places lie unmarked at Monrovia's Live Oak Memorial Park, will finally be recognized and markers added to their graves.

A program highlighting the lives and legacies of Anna H. Jones and Dr. Sophia B. Jones, will be held on Saturday, May 3 beginning with a program and luncheon at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 925 S. Shamrock Ave., followed by the dedication of their grave markers at 3 p.m. at Live Oak Memorial Park. The event and luncheon are free and open to the public. Please RSVP by April 25 to (626) 664-6537 or spicerbatice@gmail.com.

These sisters, born in the 1850s, were pioneers in education and medicine, overcoming racial and gender barriers. Yet their stories are barely known here.

Anna was a visionary educator, suffragist, and civil rights leader who made lasting contributions to higher learning in the US. She broke new ground as a teacher at Ohio's Wilberforce University, where she also served as Dean of Women. Later, she became the first African American teacher in Kansas City and then the first African American principal of Douglass School, a public school for African Americans. She founded the Kansas City Colored Women’s League, was a founding member of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, and in 1900 delivered a paper at the first Pan-African Congress in London. Eventually, she settled with her siblings at 1301 S. Shamrock Ave. in Monrovia, had a small orange ranch and continued her fight for social justice by founding the “Anna H. Jones Club,” still going strong, to help local graduates pursue a college education.

Sophia was equally determined but focused on the medical field. Denied admission because of her race to the medical school at the University of Toronto, where she earned an undergraduate degree, she pursued her dream in the U.S., in 1885 becoming the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School. She became the first Black female faculty member at Spelman College in Atlanta, establishing its nursing program. She went on to teach at Wilberforce University, serve at Frederick Douglass Hospital, and publish influential work on public health. She, too, spent her final years at the family home on South Shamrock. Both operated in the highest circles of elite Black activists. Their close friend W.E.B. Du Bois, co-founder of the NAACP, marked each of their passings in his national magazine, The Crisis.

Their stories underscore perseverance, scholarship, and activism. This gathering will celebrate their achievements and reveal little-known aspects of their roles in shaping higher education and medicine. All are invited to learn more about these extraordinary women and witness the dedication of newly placed grave markers honoring them at Live Oak Memorial Park.
