An automotive team from Citrus College, which serves Monrovia, will be one of 125 student teams from across the Western Hemisphere competing at the eighth annual Shell Eco-marathon Competition to determine which student-built vehicle can travel the farthest distance using the least amount of energy.
The Citrus Automotive and Physics Eco-marathon (CAPE) Owls - an interdisciplinary research group composed of seven physics and automotive technology students - was selected to compete in the global event taking place April 24-27 at the Discovery Green Park in Houston. This is the Owls' first time in the event.

Classic Cars at Unity Center Awards Dinner
Foothill Unity Center Fabulous ‘50s Golden Plate Awards dinner will feature classic '50s cars, many from the group, Street Rods Forever. Monrovia On the Home Front During World War Two
"On The Home Front" is an upcoming exhibit about Monrovia during World War Two at the Monrovia Historical Museum (742 E. Lemon). The grand opening on April 22, 1-4 p.m. will feature WWII WASP pilot Beverley Beesemyer, The Patriot Guard Motorcycle Group, the Monrovia VFW and American Legion.

Automation at the Monrovia Chili's
My wife and I had dinner at the Monrovia Chili's tonight, and this device was on the table. It lets you re-order (not your initial order) drinks, order dessert, play games (for $.99), read USA Today, and pay your bill. You cannot order appetizers or main dishes (you can preview some dishes), though it is easy to see that day coming. I suspect this will result in fewer servers in the long run.

Trail Into Monrovia's Hillside Recreation Area May Open in July
If all goes well, the Cloverleaf entry point to the city's Hillside Preserve in the foothills above Monrovia could be open this July.
Monrovia City Council Member Becky Shevlin writes that Recreation Supervisor Kerri Zessau updated the Community Services Commission during last night's meeting on Cloverleaf access and said she and new Community Services Director, Tina Cherry, "will be meeting with the City Attorney next week to discuss progress with the access issue; that they have finally now been able to meet with [a Cloverleaf property owner] but that she believes the City is still on track to, if necessary, bring this issue back to City Council in June and if all goes well, to have it open in July."

Monrovia Police: 'Zero Tolerance' for Driving-While-Phoning
As part of April's Distracted Driving Awareness Month campaign, the Monrovia Police Department will be joining with over 200 local law enforcement agencies and the California Highway Patrol in a month long "zero tolerance" enforcement and education campaign to curb those texting or operating hand-held cell phones while driving. Officers will be on alert throughout the month for those who break the cell phone laws and place themselves and others in danger. Special high-visibility enforcement operations to cite cell phone violators will take place throughout the month of April.
The increased enforcement and education aims to persuade drivers to recognize the dangers of distracted driving and reduce the number of people impacted by this perilous behavior. The "It's Not Worth It!" theme emphasizes that a phone call or text isn't worth a hefty fine or a collision. The current minimum ticket cost is $161, with subsequent tickets costing at least $281.
"We take the issue of distracted driving very seriously," said Monrovia Police Sergeant Daniel Verna, "because we see the aftermath of these totally preventable crashes. Is that text message or cell phone call really worth $161, or worse, someone's life?"
Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. In addition, studies show that texting while driving can delay a driver's reaction time just as severely as having a blood alcohol content of a legally drunk driver. According to research, sending or receiving a text takes a driver's eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. Even a three second glance at freeway speeds means a driver has traveled the distance of a football field.
Research shows that there is no difference in the risks between hands-free and hand-held cell phone conversations, both of which can result in "inattention blindness" which occurs when the brain isn't seeing what is clearly visible because the driver's focus is on the phone conversation and not on the road. When over one third of your brain's function that should be on your driving moves over to cell phone talking, you can become a cell phone "zombie."

Former Monrovia Representative Making Strong Showing in Field Poll
In his race to become governor, Tim Donnelly, who represented Monrovia in the State Assembly before redistricting, is leading other Republican candidates - by far. A Field Poll indicates Donnelly is favored by Republicans by 34% as opposed to the other main Republican candidate, Neel Kashkari, with 3%.
