Monrovia City Council to Consider Oliver Chi as New City Manager

It appears Oliver Chi will be Monrovia's new city manager, effective October 13 of this year, if the City Council approves a proposed three-year appointment, with a base salary of $195,000 per year, at its Tuesday's (Sept. 16) city council meeting (agenda: http://goo.gl/44bDln ).

The staff report ( http://goo.gl/7wg1CY ) does not give any background on Chi, and the only Oliver Chi I can locate is currently assistant city manager for Barstow. This Oliver Chi graduated with a BA in political science from USC and holds a master's degree in public administration from USC ( http://goo.gl/2KIZZa ), and was previously the city manager of Rosemead, but was let go by the city council there. The only information I can find on this particular Oliver Chi - again, not sure I have the right one - is kind of mixed, though these are not all news stories, but lean on the opinion side and are a bit dated. But here they are for what they are worth: http://goo.gl/fbJWNa , http://goo.gl/OUDygh , http://goo.gl/BNDHnN , http://goo.gl/uTqo7Z

  1. That's the same Oliver. He has a very sketchy past and has been involved with numerous scandals and been fired from two cities. A bad choice to lead the city

    1. This happened because your hiring staff and city council want progress! Someone over there knows what their doing! Im going to guess that you two previous posts are competitors of his.....

    2. Wrong on all accounts. I live here and remember the mess that was created in Rosemead when Chi was city manager there. I feel we deserve better than what he has brought and his accomplishments are exactly what?

  3. Actually hes an excellent choice. Don't base your opinion and decisions based on a few haters and rag papers. This guy will get things done in your community. It is difficult to be in a city manager position as there are so many different personalities and people required to please. A council consists of five people, that is a lot of bosses to have! besides your staff and an entire community. If you stand behind this individual your community will flourish! As in all things, find out for yourself and do not judge based on rumors and heresay, that is such a cheap and mean way to operate!

  4. Wow..I'm thinking Mr Chi and his fast talking buddies are busy bolstering him here. Facts are funny things and the way he and his two coworkers played around while at Rosemead should be fair warning. I don't think Monrovia wants to go through what Rosemead did a few years ago..still paying for it. Why was he out of work for two years and fortunate Barstow hired him....if his reputation didn't proceed him.

  5. Hey Monrovia, if you do not want him, we will keep him. We, at the City of Barstow, love Oliver, his character, his work ethic, his leadership, and his laugh, . He is the best thing that ever happened to the City. And, I thought only small town Barstow acted like a bunch of Crabs in a Bucket! Grow up people!

  6. Ok! Deal! Don't lecture me. I've lived here 40 years and never complained about a prospective hire of this city..ever. But this is too important and I know the facts. To be glib and call us names is childish. We pay the salary and live with the results. We deserve better..period.
