I snapped this picture of a bear rummaging around in our backyard (on Hillcrest in Monrovia) just a few minutes ago. I found that forcefully saying "Go away bear!" from beside the illusory safety of a door that can quickly be shut was most effective.

Your verbal reaction was better than that of my friend on Norumbega (aka Bear Boulevard). Having left her back door open, she turned to see a grizzly standing next to her in her kitchen. "You're a BEAR!" she observed brightly. Then she stepped through the inner kitchen door, shut it behind her, and waited for her guest to leave the way he arrived.
