Comment: Room For Improvement at the County Registrar-Recorder's Office
Around October 20 I thought I'd look up who has given what to the various Monrovia School Board candidates. Today, a day after the election, I got that information.
Here's how the process worked:
I searched for financial disclosure information at the Registrar's website, lavote.net, and failed, then used Google and failed, then wrote to the Registrar's email help line and got an irrelevant answer. I finally spoke with the treasurer of one of the candidates who - because he had to do the financial reporting - knew a phone number for the Registrar's Campaign Finance Section.
I called that number and was told the information I wanted is not online and to get it I'd need to send an email with my request, including the name of the election (Monrovia School Board), the candidates for whom I wanted information (all of 'em), and the year of the election (sigh, 2020).
I did that and got back an email saying they could not provide the information by email, I'd also have to provide a postal address.
I did that, and I got the information (most of it) on the day after the election.
I'm sorry, but this is the kind of rigmarole I would expect in 1993. This is the computer age and this information should be online - all of it, not just for countywide offices. The Registrar's job is to collect that data and make it public, so every document that is public record should be scanned into PDF form the moment it comes in the door and should immediately be posted on the Registrar's website.
The contortions that were required to obtain basic public information shouldn't be necessary. This needs to be corrected.

Citrus Again Named Top Community College for Hispanics
Citrus has been recognized as a top community college for Hispanic students for more than a decade.
In its October issue, the magazine ranked Citrus College in the top 10 colleges and universities in two categories: ninth for conferring family and consumer sciences/human sciences degrees to Hispanic students, and 10th for conferring English language and literature/letters degrees to Hispanic students.

Former Monrovia Police Chief Tubbs Has Died
Former Monrovia Police Chief, Bill Tubbs, has died. The Monrovia Police Department reports that:
Bill Tubbs was appointed as the Monrovia Chief of Police in 1979, and served in this position for ten years. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and came up through the ranks of our department. Under the guidance of Chief Tubbs, the department explored and adopted a number of new and innovative techniques for policing the community. He believed that the backbone of the department was the patrol force and emphasized the importance of the patrol officer in keeping the community safe and free from crime.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

~ On November 17 the City Council will consider a deal with Southern California Edison to upgrade 1,700 street lights from high-pressure sodium to LED bulbs, which use less energy and last longer. It is also a cleaner light less glare, reducing light pollution. Reduced electricity costs will pay for the upgrade and provide about $14,000 more per year in electrical cost savings. The project could begin as early as February.
~ Monrovia has asked Governor Newsom to consider a posthumous pardon for Steven Kiyoshi Kuromiya, who was arrested by Monrovia Police in 1956 for being gay. Kuromiya passed away over 20 years ago.
~ Tree trimming begins Monday, Nov. 9, between Mayflower and Myrtle from Foothill to the south city limit. It should take about 4 weeks.

School District Honors Fred and Diane Bowden at Weight Room Dedication
Monrovia Unified School District honored Fred and Diane Bowden, along with the Bowden family, during an Oct. 27 dedication ceremony at Monrovia High School that named the school's weight room the 'Fred and Diane Bowden Weight Room.'
For their longtime support of the District and Monrovia High School (MHS) Athletics, Fred and Diane Bowden were honored during an Oct. 27 dedication ceremony that named MHS's weight room the 'Fred and Diane Bowden Weight Room.'
Fred, who passed away in 2018, and Diane, graduated from Monrovia High School in 1959 and 1961, respectively. The two always looked for ways to give back to the District and with Fred's passing, Diane and the Bowden family made a commitment to continue that support.
"Monrovia High School is very fortunate that so many alumni feel so close to their Wildcat campus. Our district is very fortunate that Diane and Fred Bowden have always been willing to support their Alma Mater," Board President Rob Hammond said. "Over the years, the Bowden family has been extremely to our community. Thank you to Diane and Fred for Living the Wildcat Way."
In September, the District celebrated a grand reopening for the weight room, which was renovated with help from the Bowen family. The room was outfitted with new equipment, painted and redecorated. The District also improved the varsity locker room.
Head MHS Football Coach Christian Williams and Monrovia City Councilmember Larry Spicer helped organize the refurbishing efforts.
"We are thankful for the staunch support of the Bowden family and excited that our Wildcat athletes will be able to focus on strength training with the equipment they need we return to school," Superintendent Dr. Katherine Thorossian said. "Even during these trying times, our community continues to show up for our students."
Diane and the Bowden family were present during the socially distanced event to receive the dedication honor from the District and MHS.
"This renovated weight room will help strengthen our athletics program and inspire our student athletes," Principal Kirk McGinnis said. "Monrovia High School Wildcats are thankful to the Bowden family, Councilmember Larry Spicer and Coach Williams for their dedication to our students and their athletic goals."
