Art committee to consider tribute to Anna and Sophia Jones

One of the designs being considered. More here.

A proposed Neighborhood Treasure on the 1300 block of South Shamrock Avenue would honor sisters Anna H. Jones and Dr. Sophia B. Jones, who lived on an orange ranch in Monrovia.

Anna was an educator, suffragist and civil rights leader who founded the Anna H. Jones Club in Monrovia to support students pursuing higher education. Sophia was the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School and founded Spelman College’s nursing program.

The Art in Public Places Committee will consider recommending a design and spending up to $20,000 to the City Council: $15,000 for the artwork and $5,000 for its pole and informational plaque. Staff reports three proposals meet the requirements. If approved, installation and a celebration are planned for winter 2027.

The committee meets Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 415 S. Ivy Ave. (agenda here).
