MAFA Oct. 1 'Art In the Park' Show Will Feature Area Artists
Artists will present paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry, digital arts, pottery and chalk art representing the area's cultural diversity. A silent auction of these artists' works will support MAFA’s art education initiatives.
The free event will also include daylong musical entertainment from local bands, a preview from more than 60 students in Centre Stage's upcoming production of "Matilda," and an array of free kids' art activities.
MAFA got its start in the late 1950's when local artists decided to form the Monrovia Arts Festival Association (MAFA) to put on an annual art show in the park. Since then MAFA's services have grown beyond a once yearly event to include after school programs, member workshops, senior workshops, summer art walks and at-home and virtual chalk festivals, and for that reason the organization's name was changed to the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts, but it's still MAFA.

Monrovia School District Will Pay Fees for Advanced Placement Exam
“I'm excited to see the many ways Monrovia Unified School District is breaking down barriers to higher education for all of our students,” Board President Selene Lockerbie said. “I hope this will encourage more students to enter the AP pathway.”
“By doing this, we ensure that every student who takes an AP course will also take the respective AP exam without having to worry about finding the money to do so,” Superintendent Dr. Ryan Smith stated. “In the past, many students had to make tough choices about which test to take due to financial concerns, so not all students who took an AP course also took the exam. As a result, some students may have missed out on the opportunity to earn college credit. This action addresses this and is a clear example of the Board and District’s commitment to equity,” he added.
“This is a great action being taken by the district,” said Monrovia High School ASB President Emma Nahapetian. “It’s definitely a weight being lifted off of students' shoulders. The school year can get expensive, and being able to earn college credit without a fee is going to benefit many. It will provide equity for all of the students enrolled in AP courses.”
In 2022, 353 AP students at MHS took a total of 605 exams. Monrovia Unified will also provide study materials/booklets to AP students to help them prepare for the spring exams. Any student/family who already paid for their exam or made a deposit will be reimbursed from their ASB accounts.

Grand Theft
September 15 at 3:47 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of N. Encinitas reported his catalytic converter was stolen from his vehicle. Officers arrived and noticed the suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed onto the 210 freeway. This investigation is continuing.

September 15 at 6:57 a.m., a caller in the 2600 block of S. California reported his trailer was taken from a parking lot. This investigation is continuing.
Public Intoxication / Mental Evaluation – Suspect Arrested
September 15 at 12:32 p.m., an employee from a business in the 300 block of W. Huntington called to report that a subject was drinking alcohol at the location and appeared drunk. Officers arrived and spoke with the subject. He was too intoxicated to care for himself. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period. While in jail the subject was attempting to harm himself. Monrovia Paramedics arrived and transported him to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.
Drug Activity – Suspect Arrested
September 16 at 2:01 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Alta Vista and Lime when she saw a motorist commit a driving violation. She stopped the vehicle and discovered the driver was in possession of a pipe. The driver was arrested and released with a citation.
Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
September 16 at 2:18 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Myrtle and Duarte when she saw a motorist commit a driving violation. She stopped the driver and found he was heavily intoxicated. After a field sobriety tests were conducted, the driver was arrested for DUI and transported to MPD jail to be held for sobering.
Injury Traffic Collision
September 16 at 9:03 a.m., a caller reported a traffic collision in the 200 block of E. Foothill. Officers and Paramedics arrived and checked on the well-being of the occupants. One of the driver's complained of pain. This investigation is continuing.
Non-Injury Traffic Collision
September 16 at 3:58 p.m., a caller reported a traffic collision in the area of Mayflower and Chestnut. The driver at fault was issued a citation.
Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested
September 17 at 12:53 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Longden and Myrtle when he saw a motorist commit a driving violation. He stopped the motorist and found the driver to be intoxicated. The driver was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.
Mental Evaluation
September 17 at 10:42 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of N. Canyon regarding a male who made suicidal statements. Upon arrival, it was determined the male had taken an excessive amount of medication, and he was determined to be a danger to himself. He was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

September 18 at 1:29 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a vehicle code violation in the area of Live Oak and Mayflower. During the investigation, the officer discovered the driver was under the influence of alcohol and unable to operate a motor vehicle safely. The subject was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

September 18 at 2:09 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a vehicle code violation in the area of Shamrock and Foothill. Weapon Offense
September 18 at 9:14 a.m., an employee from a residential complex in the 1110 block of S. Fifth called to report that two subjects were in the building’s bathroom. He told them to leave, but instead of leaving, the male subject brandished a knife. The employee left and called the police. This investigation is continuing.

September 18 at 10:34 p.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Myrtle and California when she saw a motorist commit a driving violation. The officer conducted a traffic stop and found the driver to be intoxicated. The subject was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

September 19 at 11:22 a.m., an employee from a business in the 800 block of W. Foothill phoned to say there was a subject in the drive-thru who might be under the influence of alcohol. Officers did an area check and located a vehicle and driver matching the description. A traffic stop was initiated and driver was contacted. An investigation revealed the subject was intoxicated. The subject was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.
Hit & Run
September 19 at 11:27 a.m., the reporting party called to report a semi-truck pulling two heavy haulers turned north onto Alamitas from Duarte and hit the traffic light on the south east corner knocking it to the ground. The truck left the area without stopping. Public Works was notified of damage. This investigation is continuing.
Indecent Exposure – Suspect Arrested
September 19 at 7:22 p.m., a resident from the 700 block of E. Lemon called to report a male suspect exposing himself inside his parked vehicle. The witness could see the suspect inside the vehicle because the interior lights were on and it was dark outside. Officers arrived and arrested the suspect.
Injury Traffic Collision
September 20 at 8:43 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Shamrock and Duarte regarding an injury traffic accident. Two cars had collided and there was a complaint of pain. They were treated at scene.

September 20 at 9:44 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Myrtle and Duarte regarding an injury traffic accident. A vehicle made an unsafe movement and struck a couple of parked vehicles in the area. The driver had a complaint of pain and was treated at the scene.
Mental Evaluation
September 20 at 1:58 p.m., several callers were reporting a male standing in the middle of the street and vehicles were swerving to avoid him. Officers arrived and when they spoke with him, it was determined he had a mental health issue and was deemed to be a danger to himself. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Unlicensed Driver
September 21 at 12:08 p.m., while patrolling the area of Myrtle and Lemon an officer witnessed a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop. The driver did not have a license. He was issued a citation and his vehicle was stored.
Grand Theft
September 21 at 6:34 p.m., an employee from a store in the 500 block of W. Huntington reported a grand theft. A suspect walked out with merchandise without paying. This investigation is continuing.
Drug Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 21 at 11:25 p.m., an officer saw a vehicle commit a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Myrtle and Central. While talking with the driver, the officer could see drug paraphernalia sitting in plain view on the center console. The driver was arrested.

The group, Grow Monrovia, has been working on the grounds of the Maryknoll Sisters retirement home in Monrovia to transform its six acres of grass to a water-saving landscaping.

He met a ton of admirers at the Wiggle Waggle Walk, and basked in all the attention from kids, other dogs, and everyone who visited.
He has a lovable and affectionate personality and is known to crawl into your lap for snuggles and kisses. Mischief also knows some basic commands already and is happy to show them off for the right treat (or toy). He is eager to please, so further training with him should be a breeze.
He is a very active guy, so if you’re looking for a running or hiking buddy, or maybe a dog to do agility, Mischief is your man!
The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.
New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

Five Monrovia Schools Honored for Effective Use of 'Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports' Tools
“This recognition signifies that Monroe staff will continue to work together to provide our students with a positive school environment,” said Monroe Principal Amanda Noriega. “Our goal is to earn a Silver medal next year.”
PBIS is a set of ideas and tools that schools use to improve students' behavior.
The California PBIS Coalition (CPC) initiated our first statewide effort in 2015 to implement a recognition system to acknowledge schools for implementing PBIS with fidelity to the national framework. Schools may apply to be recognized as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum PBIS schools.
“Supportive, Inclusive, and Student-Centered School Cultures are a district focus area,” Superintendent Dr. Ryan Smith said. “Our work with PBIS is a key strategy for addressing that. I’m excited to watch our efforts lead to new heights.”
These awards are the first time the California PBIS Coalition has awarded Monrovia Unified schools medals.
MUSD principals said they’ve seen the difference PBIS has made in the classroom and hope to improve their scores next year.
“Students know how to behave and how to solve conflicts positively because they are explicitly taught behavior expectations and conflict resolution strategies,” said Mayflower Principal Michele Costarella. “This not only breeds a positive environment but empowers our students with the skills to think and make good choices about their behavior.”

Opinion: I signed up and found the pickings very thin. The focus is on race, gender and international, so if that's your interest you'll probably be happy.
I didn't recognize many of the films and many of the categories had little or nothing in them. For instance the categories Science Fiction & Fantasy (there is no "Science" category, by the way), Family Friendly, Animation, Horror, and Instructional displayed this message: "Alas, your selection isn't available at your library." "Family Friendly" isn't available for the Monrovia library?!
In the Thriller category were just two listings: Wild Indian, and Lila & Eve; In Action & Adventure was just one film - Kills on Wheels; and Classic Cinema had just three films: Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman, Native Son, and Black Like Me.
Hopefully the selection will become a more inclusive as it grows.

The officer spoke with the driver and noticed he displayed symptoms of being under the influence. The driver was arrested and transported to a local hospital where blood was drawn. He was transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.

September 8 at 11:07 a.m., an employee from a business in the 1600 block of S. Mountain called to report that a subject shoplifted and was walking through the parking lot. Officers arrived and saw the subject, who immediately ran. Officers followed the subject from a safe distance until he tired out. He was arrested and taken into custody.

September 10 at 8:23 a.m., a caller reported that three parked vehicles were side swiped sometime during the night near the intersection of Foothill and Violet. This investigation is continuing.

September 10 at 11:10 am, a caller in the 300 block of S. Madison reported that someone tried to steal her vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

September 10 at 3:41 p.m., a witness in the 100 block of W. Pomona saw suspects stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle in the area. This investigation is continuing.

September 10 at 9:14 p.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Myrtle and Duarte, when she observed a cyclist commit a vehicle code violation. She conducted a traffic stop. During her investigation the subject was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested and released with a citation.
Reckless Driving Causing Injury
September 11 at 12:01 p.m., officers were responding to a call when one of them observed a subject laying in the middle of the street next to a vehicle in the 100 block of W. Cherry. The officer stopped to investigate and saw the victim had multiple injuries to his face arms and legs. The driver of the vehicle said the victim was his cousin and that he had found him lying in the street, he said he must have been attacked. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment. Through investigation, officers determined the victim had actually gotten on to the hood of a vehicle while it was moving and had fallen off the vehicle causing his injuries. The investigation is continuing.

A DUI investigation revealed he was under the influence. He was arrested and transported to the MPD jail to be held for a sobering period.
Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested
September 11 at 9:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to a hotel in the 700 block of W. Huntington on a report of domestic violence. The victim said her boyfriend hit her in the face. Officers arrived and detained the male subject. After speaking with the victim, they determined she had been assaulted by her boyfriend. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Vehicle Impound
September 11 at 5:32 p.m., an officer was driving east on Lime approaching Myrtle when he saw a vehicle blocking the roadway. There were no occupants in the vehicle and it was not running. It appears whoever was driving the vehicle parked it and left it unattended in the roadway, blocking anyone else from passing. The vehicle was stored per the vehicle code for blocking the roadway.

September 12 at 3:19 a.m., an officer was patrolling a park in the 1600 block of Myrtle and noticed a subject in the park after hours. The subject was contacted and during the investigation discovered the subject had a controlled substances in his possession. He was arrested.

September 12 at 6:59 a.m., a victim in the 1200 block of S. Sherman called to report her ex-boyfriend was the location and broke her vehicle window and went into the residence through an open window. The victim went into the backyard and hid until police arrived. The suspect was gone when police arrived. This investigation is continuing.
Petty Theft
September 12 at 7:06 a.m., a victim in the 300 block of N. Canyon called to report the spare keys for two vehicles were stolen from inside one of their vehicles. This investigation is continuing.
Traffic Collision – City Property
September 12 at 12:45 p.m., a truck was turning from Myrtle onto Lime and accidentally hit a street light, causing damage.
Petty Theft
September 12 at 2:44 p.m., a male and two females entered a supermarket in the 100 block of W. Foothill and took approximately $700 worth of merchandise. This investigation is continuing.
Grand Theft Auto
September 12 at 2:51 p.m., the victim parked his vehicle at a store in the 1600 block of S. Mountain and went inside for approximately 20 minutes. When he came out his truck was gone. This investigation is continuing.
Traffic Collision
September 12 at 11:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Fig regarding a vehicle that collided into several parked vehicles. This investigation is continuing.
Vandalism
September 13 at 12:34 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of E. Huntington regarding a subject spray painting a wall. Officers arrived and conducted an area search but were unable to locate the suspect. This investigation is continuing.

September 13 at 7:47 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Foothill and McKinley regarding a traffic collision. When they arrived and contacted both parties, it was determined one of the parties had a complaint of pain. A report was taken.
Shoplifting / Warrant Arrest – Suspect Arrested
September 13 at 10:59 a.m., an employee called from a business in the 400 block of W. Huntington to report a subject took a beer and left the location without paying for it. Officers arrived in the area and stopped the individual. A computer check of the subject revealed he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was arrested and taken into custody.

September 13 at 12:14 p.m., the victim called from the 200 block of S. Madison to report her catalytic converter had been stolen. This investigation is continuing.

September 13 at 2:47 p.m., the victim in the 200 block of S. Heliotrope reported his vehicle had been broken into. This investigation is continuing.
Residential Burglary
September 13 at 3:25 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of N. Myrtle phoned to say someone had been in her residence. She noticed the bedroom window was slightly ajar but the screen was still intact. When she walked into the bedroom she noticed her bedroom had been ransacked. This investigation is continuing.
Domestic Violence – Suspect Arrested
September 13 at 9:48 p.m., a caller reported two subjects arguing in the 100 block of S. Ivy. Officers arrived and spoke with both parties and discovered they were in an argument when the female struck the male numerous times causing injuries. The female subject was arrested and taken into custody.

September 14 at 6:46 a.m., the reporting party arrived at his job site in the 1700 block of S. Magnolia and discovered the windows to a vehicle left at the site had been broken into. This investigation is continuing.
Battery
September 14 at 2:05 p.m., a battery was reported in the 600 block of S. Myrtle. A mother and daughter where approached by a male subject and spat on. This investigation is continuing.
Wanted Person – Suspect Arrested
September 14 at 8:07 p.m., officers were dispatched to a business in the 400 block of W. Huntington regarding a possible shoplifting. During the investigation, officers discovered the suspect dropped the property inside the store before leaving. Computer checks revealed the subject had an outstanding warrant. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Fraud / Identity Theft
September 14 at 8:54 p.m., a female subject walked into a car dealership in the 1400 block of S. Mountain and attempted to purchase a vehicle using someone else’s information. The subject was taken into custody without incident. He was arrested and taken into custody.
Brandishing a Firearm
September 14 at 10:39 p.m., a victim in the 1500 block of Encino called to report he saw a subject urinating in his neighbor's yard. He confronted the subject who was with another male and two females. One of the subjects pulled a firearm and brandished it, asking if there "was a problem," and fled the scene in a vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

Food ED Plans First Green Care Day

Food Exploration and Discovery (Food ED) is a Monrovia non profit that creates spaces and programs that utilize gardens to inspire community building, problem solving, and stewardship. It runs programs in grades K-12 at Monrovia Schools and manages the Monrovia Community Garden.
The kickoff will be at Monrovia Community Garden, at 303 West Colorado, at 9 a.m. Mayor Becky Shevlin, School Superintendent Dr. Ryan D. Smith, District Representative of State Senator Anthony Portantino, Kristi Lopez, and Monrovia School Board Members will be attending.
