Four-Year-Old Simba Can't Wait to Meet You

Simba is so handsome and sweet! He’s four years old, his tail wags a mile a minute and he can’t wait to meet you!

This handsome guy has become a volunteer and staff favorite at Pasadena Humane. One of his adoring fans has even sponsored his adoption fee! He’s quiet, mellow, but also ready to have fun.

Simba has been spending time in a foster home, and the foster family has given us a lot of information about him. They’ve described him as a playful, mellow and gentle giant. He has been wary of new dogs, but he has been playing happily with some who he has gotten to know.

He’s also done very well with training. He loves treats, so that’s great motivation for him to learn new things. He’s also super cuddly and is quick to hop up on the couch for some snuggling. Bonus- he's already house-trained!

Simba is ready to be your very own king of the jungle!

Pasadena Humane will have a Free Adoption Day on Saturday, May 25th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. All dogs, cats and critters are eligible. Pet licensing fees may apply.

The normal adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 2:00 – 5:00. For those who prefer, adoption appointments are available daily from 10:30 – 1:30, and can be scheduled online. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet. Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

Updated Monrovia History, 'Renaissance Years,' Now Available

In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the election that changed Monrovia, an updated edition of the book, Renaissance Years: A History of Modern Monrovia is now available for purchase from the Monrovia Historical Society and the Monrovia Historical Museum.

This 400-page book, which sold out in its first printing, is by local author Dick Singer and is an account of the community's decline after World War II and its  rebirth under the leadership of Bob Bartlett, Pat Ostrye and Eric Faith, elected to the City Council in 1974.

Bartlett was the first African American on the council and served as mayor for twelve years. Ostrye, the city's first elected mayor, was also the first woman to serve on the council. Their election began a program of renewal that led to Monrovia winning its All America City honor in 1995.

Though focused primarily on Monrovia's renaissance, the book encapsulates the city's entire history, from its founding in 1886 to events in 2017 when the work was first published. The new edition extends this history up to the just-completed March 2024 municipal election.

Renaissance Years is the first of three local histories by Singer, the others are, 1887: A History of Early Monrovia, and People Like You and Me: A History of Monrovia in World War II. All proceeds from the three books go to support local history projects.

Renaissance Years and its companion books are available at Charlie’s House, 430 S. Myrtle, from the Monrovia Historical Museum in Recreation Park, open Thursday and Sunday afternoons, or by contacting the Monrovia Historical Society at monroviahistoricalsociety1896@gmail.com.

Goofy Rhino Just Wants to Be Your Friend

Gentle and affectionate Rhino just wants to be your best friend! This handsome and goofy boy is just over a year old and very entertaining. He seems to have a wide-eyed wonderment of the world- every day brings something new and exciting!

Rhino is surprisingly mellow for a dog his age- he walks well on leash and just leans into you for as many pets as you can give him. He also responds very well to training and understands when it’s time to calm down.

Rhino was recently out with the mobile outreach team and he had a great day out- meeting tons of new people, soaking up attention from kids and getting belly rubs. He’s also been on a couple field trips with the Pasadena Humane volunteers. He’s an avid hiker and is up for any adventure.

Come meet your new BFF, Rhino, today!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

His neat cottage home and dairy are situated on California Avenue, and a visit to his stables will convince anyone that the stock receives the very best of care. The cows are all high grade, testing from 100 to 120. He will keep nothing but the very best of stock obtainable, and consequently his customers are sure of getting good milk and cream." Monrovia Health Group Must Pay $7 Million for False Medicare Claims

The United States and the State of California have reached a $7,084,000 civil settlement with Monrovia-based ReNew Health Group LLC, ReNew Health Consulting Services LLC, and two corporate executives for knowingly submitting false Medicare Part A claims for nursing home residents.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, to conserve hospital beds, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services waived the requirement that a person must have had a hospital stay of at least three days (signaling an acute illness or injury) before reimbursing for skilled care in a nursing home.

The United States and the State of California alleged that the defendants knowingly misused this waiver by routinely submitting claims for nursing home residents when they did not have COVID-19 or any other acute illness or injury, but merely had been near other people who had COVID-19.  Under the settlement, the defendants will pay $6,841,727 to the United States and $242,273 to the State of California, plus interest.

“False claims are anathema to the Medicare system, especially during a public health crisis,” said United States Attorney Martin Estrada of the Central District of California. “This settlement agreement highlights my office’s determination to ensure our nation’s health care programs help those who actually need them.”

“The Department of Justice is committed to protecting the integrity of taxpayer-funded programs,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. “We will hold accountable those who sought to defraud such programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, including those who knowingly misused emergency waivers for personal gain.”

This investigation was prompted by a lawsuit filed under the whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act, which permit private parties to sue on behalf of the government to redress false claims for government funds and to receive a share of any recovery.  The settlement agreement in this case provides for the whistleblower, Bay Area Whistleblower Partners, to receive $1,204,280, plus interest, as its share of the settlement.  The case is captioned United States and State of California ex rel. Bay Area Whistleblower Partners v. ReNew Health Group LLC et al., No. 2:20-cv-09472 (C.D. Cal.).

Assistant United States Attorney Karen Y. Paik of the Civil Division’s Civil Fraud Section and Senior Trial Counsel Albert P. Mayer of the Justice Department’s Civil Division, Commercial Litigation Branch, Fraud Section are handling this matter with assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General and the California Department of Justice’s Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse.

The claims settled by the United States and the State of California are allegations only, and there was no determination of liability.
