Council to Discuss Signing Up for Green Energy Option

At its next meeting (agenda: t.ly/_tlc) the Monrovia City Council will ...

~ Discuss joining 32 other cities in the Clean Power Alliance joint powers authority, which would give the city access to green, or "green-er" electricity starting in 2024. If the city joins, it would choose a default green level: 100% renewable (such as wind, solar, geothermal), 50% green, or 40% green. However, individual customers could switch to one of the other two levels, or opt-out entirely and return to SCE electricity. For each $100 of electricity at current rates, 100% green electricity would cost an extra $3 and 50% green would cost an extra $1. t.ly/EB_2

~ Consider appointing Susie Ling to fill the unexpired Monrovia Library Board term ending June 30, 2023. The position became vacant when board member Janet Wall resigned to become city treasurer. t.ly/G3Il

~ Consider proclaiming Oct. 10-16, as Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week. t.ly/1QFG

~ Consider proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. t.ly/B2NF

~ Consider proclaiming October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. t.ly/kWwO

Green Care Day Draws 300 to Monrovia Schools

Food ED, a local Monrovian nonprofit, hosted its first Green Care Day on Saturday morning, Sept. 24 at six schools and the community garden in Monrovia. Sites included Monroe Elementary, Plymouth Elementary, Mayflower Elementary, Wild Rose Elementary, Monrovia High School, Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet Middle School, and Monrovia Community Garden.

Almost 300 people gave their time and energy to beautify gardens, mix new soil, clean up campuses, stain picnic tables, and make their outdoor learning spaces hospitable to students and our pollinator friends for the new school year.

Volunteers were welcomed by Mayor Becky Shevlin, who thanked everyone for their efforts and by MUSD School Board President Selene Lockerbie, who said these gardens do more than just grow food. "They teach kids about career pathways and healthy eating. What Food ED is doing is educating our students about creating a sustainable future." Volunteers joined community partners like Amigos de los Rios, Pack 66, Girl Scouts, Starbucks, and other service groups for a successful day.

Kristin Ritzau, Executive Director for Food ED, said, "It was to see so many great people come out to help the gardens and schools. Monrovia truly has a special spirit and we are grateful for the energy everyone brought today."

Shy and Gorgeous Milo Warms Up As He Gets To Know You

Milo is an exceptionally unique-looking Shepherd mix. Despite his stunning good looks, Milo is as shy as he is gorgeous. He is uncertain of new people, and sadly that has made people pass him by.

It's when you get to spend quality time with Milo that you can see his true personality. He recently went for a day out with one of our staff members and she found that he walked right next to her, made friends with some other dogs and thoroughly enjoyed the car ride. At home, he relaxed and even tried to help with homework!

Milo is a little over 1 ½ years old and has playful energy. He loves treats, so once he becomes comfortable in his forever home, he’ll be so much fun to train, take camping and hiking and probably be a superstar model!

The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.

New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.

View photos of adoptable pets and schedule an adoption appointment at pasadenahumane.org. Adoptions are by appointment only, and new adoption appointments are available every Sunday and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

MAFA Oct. 1 'Art In the Park' Show Will Feature Area Artists

After a two-year COVID hiatus, Monrovia Association of Fine Arts' 60th Art in the Park Show and Chalkfest will be held on Saturday, October 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Library Park, and will feature displays by more than 30 of the most accomplished regional fine artists (adults and students) and chalk art professionals.

Artists will present paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry, digital arts, pottery and chalk art representing the area's cultural diversity. A silent auction of these artists' works will support MAFA’s art education initiatives.

The free event will also include daylong musical entertainment from local bands, a preview from more than 60 students in Centre Stage's upcoming production of "Matilda," and an array of free kids' art activities.

MAFA got its start in the late 1950's when local artists decided to form the Monrovia Arts Festival Association (MAFA) to put on an annual art show in the park. Since then MAFA's services have grown beyond a once yearly event to include after school programs, member workshops, senior workshops, summer art walks and at-home and virtual chalk festivals, and for that reason the organization's name was changed to the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts, but it's still MAFA.

Monrovia School District Will Pay Fees for Advanced Placement Exam

The Monrovia Unified School District will pay the fees of any student interested in taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams later this spring. AP courses provide students with the opportunity to take college-level coursework in high school. Most colleges and universities offer credit to students who pass the exams taken at the end of each course. Typically, the cost of each exam is about $100. For juniors and seniors who often take more than one course, the fees can add up quickly.

“I'm excited to see the many ways Monrovia Unified School District is breaking down barriers to higher education for all of our students,” Board President Selene Lockerbie said. “I hope this will encourage more students to enter the AP pathway.”

“By doing this, we ensure that every student who takes an AP course will also take the respective AP exam without having to worry about finding the money to do so,” Superintendent Dr. Ryan Smith stated. “In the past, many students had to make tough choices about which test to take due to financial concerns, so not all students who took an AP course also took the exam. As a result, some students may have missed out on the opportunity to earn college credit. This action addresses this and is a clear example of the Board and District’s commitment to equity,” he added.

“This is a great action being taken by the district,” said Monrovia High School ASB President Emma Nahapetian. “It’s definitely a weight being lifted off of students' shoulders. The school year can get expensive, and being able to earn college credit without a fee is going to benefit many. It will provide equity for all of the students enrolled in AP courses.”

In 2022, 353 AP students at MHS took a total of 605 exams. Monrovia Unified will also provide study materials/booklets to AP students to help them prepare for the spring exams. Any student/family who already paid for their exam or made a deposit will be reimbursed from their ASB accounts.

Five Monrovia Schools Honored for Effective Use of 'Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports' Tools

Five Monrovia schools were recognized for their work in using Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Mayflower, Plymouth, and Bradoaks earned a silver medal, while Monroe and Santa Fe earned bronze.

“This recognition signifies that Monroe staff will continue to work together to provide our students with a positive school environment,” said Monroe Principal Amanda Noriega. “Our goal is to earn a Silver medal next year.”

PBIS is a set of ideas and tools that schools use to improve students' behavior.

The California PBIS Coalition (CPC) initiated our first statewide effort in 2015 to implement a recognition system to acknowledge schools for implementing PBIS with fidelity to the national framework. Schools may apply to be recognized as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum PBIS schools.

“Supportive, Inclusive, and Student-Centered School Cultures are a district focus area,” Superintendent Dr. Ryan Smith said. “Our work with PBIS is a key strategy for addressing that. I’m excited to watch our efforts lead to new heights.”

These awards are the first time the California PBIS Coalition has awarded Monrovia Unified schools medals.

MUSD principals said they’ve seen the difference PBIS has made in the classroom and hope to improve their scores next year.

“Students know how to behave and how to solve conflicts positively because they are explicitly taught behavior expectations and conflict resolution strategies,” said Mayflower Principal Michele Costarella. “This not only breeds a positive environment but empowers our students with the skills to think and make good choices about their behavior.”

Monrovia On Target With Water Savings; Job Openings; Electric Bikes Cheap! Film Access Through Monrovia Library

In his latest report (https://goo.gl/aOqX7O) City Manager Dylan Feik reports:

~ Monrovia was able to save 22% of water in August compared to 2020. This puts the city on target to achieving the Metropolitan Water District's goal of 20% water use reduction. Here's a report on water by the Public Works Department to the City Council: t.ly/WSRw

~ There are several job openings with the city. See them here: t.ly/NC2R

~ The GoSGV electric bike program offers long-term sharing of electric bicycles to San Gabriel Valley residents to help decrease drive-alone trips and increase bicycling trips. Two bike typess are available:  Classic Commuter - $69 a month for early bird special ($79 standard); Student - $49 a month; Cargo - starting at $129 a month for up to 2 months. Details: https://www.gosgv.com/

~ Monrovia Public Library is launching a new service for card holders, Kanopy, an online film and television streaming service. It has 300 film and television titles, including international films, PBS documentaries, historical dramas, and biographies. Sign in with your library card here: t.ly/jk7C

Opinion: I signed up and found the pickings very thin. The focus is on race, gender and international, so if that's your interest you'll probably be happy.

I didn't recognize many of the films and many of the categories had little or nothing in them. For instance the categories Science Fiction & Fantasy (there is no "Science" category, by the way), Family Friendly, Animation, Horror, and Instructional displayed this message: "Alas, your selection isn't available at your library." "Family Friendly" isn't available for the Monrovia library?!

In the Thriller category were just two listings: Wild Indian, and Lila & Eve; In Action & Adventure was just one film - Kills on Wheels; and Classic Cinema had just three films: Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman, Native Son, and Black Like Me.

Hopefully the selection will become a more inclusive as it grows.
